Rock-A-Bye Baby, in the electromechanical shaker | Hacker Day

Although engineering thinking is a valuable tool most of the time, in some cases it does not seem appropriate. Solving problems in the family unit seems to be one such area, but then again, this kind of automatic rocking mechatronics crib seems to be just a solution to sleep problems.

Judging from the appearance of [Peter]'s creation, it has fewer swings and more gentle swings back and forth. For anyone who has ever had to shake a child to sleep, its purpose is obvious: adding a bit of gentle motion to the mixture can help restless babies settle down quickly. However, maintaining the correct rhythm can be a problem, and when a particularly aggressive toddler is struggling with the impulse to sleep, endurance is also a problem. [Peter]’s solution was an aluminum extruded frame with some beautiful linear bearings that straddle the short axis of the crib, which is at the top of the whole thing.

A recirculating ball screw-but the best choice for [Junior]-and a stepper to drive the crib back and forth. [Peter] Carefully isolate the drive system from the bed mechanically, and choose the drive electronics and power supply to ensure minimal noise. Despite thinking about it, we have been put to sleep more than once by the whine of the 3D printer. Or maybe it's smoke.

Tribute to [Peter], its setting will surely win back some of the most precious and elusive commodity for new parents: sleep.

I think mine is easier... :/)

There are too many places where the solution is so simple. We bought a big spring (you can even buy a special one for a small amount) and hung our children in their "Kinderwagen" (I don’t understand English words—I’m not a native speaker) "bag" ( Stroller?) Go to it (also requires a good hook on the ceiling) and fix it with some extra ropes, it is more or less balanced and cannot turn in any direction. Baby moves-the bag starts to swing and slowly gets damp. good results. No motor is needed. Really shook himself.

This is just the scream of the video. It leaves a lot of questions: what does it sound like, and what speed can it achieve? How does the resonant frequency of the bed feel, and which motion curves can be used? (Sine, ease in/ease out, PID, sawtooth, leineair)? Can you upgrade it with a noise detector and make it start shaking when crying in the bay? Or, oh wait! Even better PID takes the baby's crying sound dB as the input! Oh man, this really needs follow-up.

I just get a funny mental picture of a serious error in the control loop. Maybe it's a kid in the case of an industrial bowl counter. The large and flexible metal block, according to the old Victorian style children's catapult, suddenly looks good from the perspective of a kiss.

If dB increases, will it increase or decrease the rocking motion?

I think I will leave this here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYcF_xX2DE8

Very smart! Unfortunately, the CDROM drive is becoming non-existent.

Linear actuators, solenoids are not :)

The power supply wiring should always have (fixed) holes on the PSU input. Hope this is only a temporary lead. The color indicates that the power supply voltage is 240V AC.

I built a cradle rocker with 24V DC motor/gear train components recovered from the laser printer, which runs on the 12V of the plug pack. The crank arm is adjustable, and the drive assembly is screwed to the wood and connected with a long bolt with a wing nut. I built it in one day. One thing is that it does not run smoothly, because the mechanism acts as a power brake at the outer end of the sine cycle instead of letting it drop smoothly. A counterweight above the fulcrum will help, but I don’t want to place any part of the mechanism above the fulcrum. Somewhere I have some videos of it running.

I know this is not "buying commercial products every day", but it seems worth mentioning that there is a commercial product (somewhat) similar to this product called snoo. It is very expensive, but mostly received good reviews/reviews. This DIY repair video is the best view of the internal workings I have seen so far: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-jJKCDqMht8

It's nice to see some other DIY methods to achieve similar results.

Picky baby? Can't sleep? Try whiskey! No matter who of you drinks it, you will definitely get some sleep.

I will not return to the joint!
